Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos’ name came up in the news recently after reports started circulating that he had left Team Nogueira.
Dos Santos was brought up by Antonio Rodrigo and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, working his way to the ranks of UFC champion when he defeated Cain Velasquez.
“Cigano” cleared up all that talk during an interview with Combate, and also talked about who his next fight might include.
“Things were very parades, I was not feeling very well this matter to evolve as a professional,” dos Santos said. “So I decided to come to Rio and of course, watching the MMA world, we know that the teacher is Dede Pederneiras, one of the biggest (technical teachers).
“I see the commands it gives to Jose Aldo, Renan Barao and the other boys when they are struggling and tastes great. I spoke with Dede, he treated me very well, (his) entire team treated me well.”
Dos Santos continued, saying, “I have immense respect for Team Nogueira, I’m Team Nogueira. Pederneiras knows it, everyone knows it. Today I’m training in Nova Uniao…logically I’m team Nogueira and will always continue training with Nogueira.”
As for what might be next, dos Santos said all he needs is three months “to prepare.”
“Never chose opponents and will not be now,” he added, mentioning both Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem, while declaring “the UFC has plenty of options.”
