Only a few days removed from the news that Josh “The Warmaster” Barnett will be returning to the UFC for the first time since 2002, the promotion has announced that he will take on fellow, former champ Frank Mir, August 31st. It’s a match-up that Barnett talked about and welcomed prior to signing a new deal with the UFC, and now it’s a go.
While appearing on The MMA Hour recently, here is what Barnett had to say about the possibility of fighting Mir:
“With Frank, it’s just the one fight everyone brings to me. I think part of that stems from us being American submission guys, and being big dudes, and having the fight between [Antonio Rodrigo] Nogueira and Mir, me and Nogueira, there’s some commonality between opponents. I can understand why fans look at it in that way. And honestly, yeah, Frank’s been around a long time. I’d have absolutely no issue fighting him in any way, shape, or form.”
The heavyweight bout will be part of UFC 164, which will be hosted by Milwaukee’s Bradley Center.
The 35 year-old Barnett (32-6) will be looking to build on the submission win he scored over Nandor Guelmino at the final Strikeforce event in January, after dropping a unanimous decision loss to Daniel Cormier last May.
Mir (16-7), meanwhile, is also coming off a UD defeat at the hands of Cormier in April. Prior to that he was stopped by Junior dos Santos last May, which ended Mir’s three fight winning streak.
Should be a great fight.
