Ian McCall and Joseph Benavidez are now likely to fight at the upcoming Super Bowl weekend card. Both of these fighters fought in the flyweight tournament to crown the first flyweight UFC champion, but both were soundly beaten by the tournament winner Demetrious Johnson. With a win in this fight, they will be taking their first steps back to a rematch with Johnson. The fight takes place at UFC 156 which is the UFC’s yearly super bowl card. The fight card is headlined by a featherweight super-fight between current 145 pound champion Jose Aldo and former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.
Joseph Benavidez was the odds on favorite to win the flyweight tournament, but Johnson had other plans in mind. Benavidez was outworked over the course of five rounds, and could not find a take down; barely putting his hands on the current champion. It seems that Benavidez has trouble with fighters that can out pace him, since his only other losses are to bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz who has one of the best gas tanks in the fight game. He could have the same problem with McCall, who is known for his wacky and hard to hit fast paced style.
McCall will be looking to redeem himself after a horrible 2012 fight campaign. It started off well with him getting called up to the big league to compete in the flyweight tournament, but that was where the fun ended. His draw with Johnson and eventual loss started his bad luck. Then an injury and arrest only made matters worse. Hopefully, his luck will turn around in the new year, but he will have to beat Benavidez to do so, which is no small task. This fight does already add to a great fight card come next February.
