After scoring an important and impressive win over Chris Cariaso at UFC on FX 8 last month, Jussier “Formiga” da Silva has reportedly been tapped to fight #1 flyweight contender Joseph Benavidez next. According to a report from Globo.com, the two will fight September 4th in Brazil, on what’s expected to be the third UFC on FOX Sports 1 card. No specific location has been determined yet, however, apparently Belo Horizonte or Porto Alegre are likely.
“Formiga” (15-2) has widely been regarded as one of the top 125 pound fighters for sometime now, and after being stopped by Jon Dodson in his Octagon debut last October, his UD win over Cariaso was pretty important. The only other man to defeat the feared grappler to date is the #3 ranked Ian McCall.
Benavidez (18-3) continues to sit at the top of the flyweight rankings, thanks to a UD victory over McCall and a KO win over Darren Uyenoyama, after losing by split decision to champ Demetrious Johnson last September. Benavidez has gone 5-1 now in the UFC since transferring over from the WEC, and the only other fighter to defeat him to date is bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz.
The UFC has not made any official announcement regarding the fight, which if it goes down, should be pretty interesting.
