Yes, that’s right, just hours after the UFC announced that Jon Jones will fight Glover Teixeira on February 22nd in Las Vegas, Dana White informed the media Thursday that the bout is a no go. If you’re thinking ‘didn’t this already happen?’, that’s because initially it was believed the two would throw down on February 1st in New Jersey…
According to a report from MMA Junkie.com, White relayed that the bout is off because Jones has pulled out; however, the UFC President didn’t offer any details as to why. White apparently added that he hopes to book the fight for March.
So, guess we’ll have to see what happens next, as chances are more info will surface in the coming days as to why the fight’s been postponed now, not once, but twice.
Teixeira (22-2) has worked his way to the top of the light-heavyweight division and secured a title shot, thanks to five consecutive wins under the UFC banner. Since arriving in the UFC , the 34 year-old has defeated notable vets like “Rampage” Jackson, James Te Huna and most recently Ryan Bader. Teixeira came back to stop the latter at UFC Fight Night 28 in September, after absorbing some hard shots early on.
Jones (19-1) is coming off his toughest test to date in the UFC, as the champion was pushed to his limits by Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 on September 21st. The 26 year-old managed to work his way to a unanimous decision win over the challenger.
Since the bout was so thrilling, there were widespread calls for an immediate rematch, but Jones and the UFC opted to give Teixeira his shot. If “Bones” defends the title versus Teixeiera (whenever that fight happens), and Gustafsson defeats Jimi Manuwa on March 8th, the two will fight again later in 2014.
