While it was a forgone conclusion that Jon Fitch would sign with the World Series of Fighting, it has been announced the Ray Sefo-led promotion has signed the former number two welterweight in the world to a four fight contract. Fitch is set to debut for WSOF on June14 in Las Vegas, N.V. His opponent was not announced, but there are a few options. The logical choice would be the winner of the Josh Burkman and Aaron Simpson fight that is taking place at the next WSOF event on March 23.
If Fitch fought Burkman, it would be a rematch seven years in the making, because Burkman was Fitch’s second fight in the Octagon. Fitch won the fight by rear naked choke in the second round. If he fought Simpson, it would be the fight that almost happened in the UFC, as the two were supposed to fight in July of 2012. It did not happen because Fitch suffered a knee injury and dropped out.
Another UFC veteran is set to debut on the same card as Fitch, and that’s Jacob Volkmann. After a 6-2 run in the UFC’s lightweight division, Volkmann was unceremoniously dropped from the promotion, and while not as shocking as a cut as Fitch, it was still weird to see such a great fighter given the boot. He will be making his debut for the WSOF against Strikeforce veteran Lyle Beerbohm, who has a stellar 21-2 record. Beerbohm is riding a five-fight winning streak since his two losses in Strikeforce, and he will need to use his grappling, as Volkmann always has a wrestling-heavy game plan.
