World Boxing Association Heavyweight champion David Haye is familiar with what James Toney is going through in his mixed martial arts training. Though a boxer, Haye has trained mixed martial arts and is an avid fan of the UFC. And while Toney contends that he will be victorious against Randy Couture in their UFC 118 co-main event, Haye feels otherwise.
According to Haye, Toney will lose his lone asset-his punching power when he engages with Couture in wrestling and grappling. Haye claims to have experience training mixed martial arts, and can personally attest to the arms getting tired as they fill with blood when grappling or wrestling with an opponent. To Haye, this will negate any positive aspects Toney will bring to the fight against Couture.
The fight at UFC 118 has been viewed by many as a sideshow, with even Dana White conceding, “I said I would never put on a freak show. I’m putting on a freak show,”. While both White and Haye have massive respect for Toney as a boxer, it is clear that both expect Couture to be the victor on August 28. And though White gives Toney a puncher’s chance, Haye clearly does not: “I admire Toney’s spirit and boxing skills. But he’s delusional here.”
