If ‘UFC only’ fans weren’t sold on “Jacare” Souza after he choked out Chris Camozzi in his UFC debut, they should be now, as the former Strikeforce champ needed less than three minutes last night to put away Yushin Okami. While “Thunder” gets fired at by critics for his grinding style, this is a man who’s been sitting a the top of the middleweight division for years and has defeated numerous established vets. So, defeating Okami, much less stopping him is no easy task.
So, having taken out the division’s #3 middleweight, there’s no doubt that Souza is in the title shot mix now, alongside men like Michael Bisping, Mark Munoz and of course, Vitor Belfort. Now the question is who will “Jacare” fight next? Well, according to the grappling god he’s down to fight pretty much anyone, except yes, the consensus G.O.A.T.. Speaking after UFC Fight Night 28 Souza relayed (comments via MMA Junkie.com):
“Anderson is someone I don’t want to fight,” Souza said. “He’s someone who’s in my camp; he’s my friend. He helps me, and I help him. So I wouldn’t be a good character if I said I wanted to fight him.”
“But, I’m a UFC fighter, and I hope the UFC never gives us this fight, but I’m ready to face anyone in the world in my weight class, and also at 205.”
That’s unfortunate news from a fan’s perspective no? Although, Souza didn’t outright say he wouldn’t fight Silva, it’s just he doesn’t want to…With the win, Souza has won five straight bouts now since he lost by UD to Luke Rockhold in September, 2011, and the 33 year-old is 9-1 in his last 10. It certainly hasn’t taken long for “Jacare” to demonstrate he’s going to be a top contender in the UFC as predicted. It will be interesting to see who they match him up next. Perhaps the winner of Bisping-Munoz?
