If you recall, last year MacDonald and Lombard where scheduled to fight last April, but the latter tested positive for PEDs and was suspended for the remainder of the year. Following MacDonald’s epic, stoppage loss to Robbie Lawler last July, many theorized that the UFC would look to have him fight Lombard next.
Well, Lombard has been booked to fight Neil Magny at UFC FN 85 in Brisbane on March 21st, while MacDonald has yet to receive his next fight. Recently Lombard spoke with MMA Junkie.com, and while doing so, he claimed MacDonald wasn’t interested in fighting him. In addition, the ridiculously powerful Judoka stated:
“He’s just taking the best options to get back on track again,” Lombard said. “He knows I’m a bad matchup for him, and he knows I hit hard.
“I wouldn’t call it scared. I would call it smart.”
How does that sit with MacDonald fans huh? Considering what MacDonald has showcased in the cage–a ton of heart–and who he’s fought in recent years (Lawler, Tyron Woodly, Tarec Saffiedine etc) it’s hard to imagine him avoiding a bout with Lombard no? Even if Mr. Lombard can be terrifying.
If MacDonald did in fact turn down the bout, perhaps it was more about the timeline, and needing further time to fully recover from his vicious war with Lawler. After all, he did have his nose and foot broken in the bout.
All this aside, it will be interesting to see how Lombard looks in his bout with Magny. If he can score a big win, he could jump into the title shot mix.
The upcoming event will be headlined by a heavyweight fight between Frank Mir and Mark Hunt.
