Gray Maynard has been at the top of the UFC lightweight division for some time, and as he prepares to face TJ Grant at UFC 160 to earn a title shot, the vet has offered his opinion of champ Benson Henderson. Although Henderson has defended his title three times now, and has defeated Maynard’s old rival Frankie Edgar twice, the powerful wrestler isn’t sold on the champ just yet.
“The Bully” appeared on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, and while discussing whether Henderson is the division’s best (which the champ should be in theory), Maynard stated:
“He’s not. He’s good though. He is good. Tough to beat. He’s that guy that’s hard to beat, but not the best.”
“I think he has three bouts that could’ve gone either/or, that were very close. And to be honest I scored three of them to the other guy — the two Edgar’s and Gil. But it could’ve gone either way.”
Of course, Maynard likely considers himself to be the division’s best, but Henderson did narrowly emerge victorious in bouts with Edgar and Melendez. At the same time, you couldn’t ridicule someone for picking Henderson to defeat any of the lightweights currently ranked in the UFC’s top ten.
This Saturday’s Maynard-Grant match-up definitely has “Fight of the Night” potential written all over it.
