Holly Holm’s victory over Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 stunned the world — including one of the world’s top boxing trainers.
Freddie Roach, who trains some of the boxing’s biggest names including Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto, was quoted last week as predicting that Rousey would “destroy” Holm.
But, as we know now, that wasn’t to be, as Holm proved the odds-makers wrong — with a stunning second round knockout.
“I underestimated her a little bit,” Roach admitted in a brief interview published yesterday by Fight Hub.
“I thought she (Rousey) would get Holly (Holm) to the ground, and Holly’s not a great ground fighter,” Roach said. “She really needs to learn to fight stand-up. (Holm) came out southpaw and she had no strategy, no way to deal with that. It was embarrassing a little; like no one had taught her about boxing.”
Asked what Rousey needs to do to win a rematch, Roach seemed hesitant to even suggest a rematch was warranted.
“People ask me about trainers and stuff like that,” he said. “You know, I’m not sure. When the girl wins that easy, sometimes the rematch is not in demand. Maybe she should go on to bigger and better things – because she destroyed her.”
