Fourth of July weekend will have a few more fireworks, because UFC 162, which takes place in Las Vegas, N.V. on July 6, just added two more pivotal featherweight match-ups. Former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar is set to take on Charles Oliveira, while Cub Swanson will finally face off with Dennis Siver. It is possible that whoever wins these bouts will face each other, because Chan Sung Jung is set to face Ricardo Lamas in a number one contender’s match on the same card.
Edgar will look to win for the first time in nearly two years when he faces Oliveira. The former champion has lost three straight bouts, and the last one came at UFC 156 at the hands of Jose Aldo. Edgar had called for a bout with Swanson, but Swanson may be too far ahead of him in terms of momentum for that bout to happen right now. Instead, Edgar will have to settle for a former foe of Swanson’s in the form of Oliveira, who has not fought since Swanson beat him. Oliveira is a dynamic featherweight, but supposedly suffered a knee injury right before his last bout. A win over Edgar will do wonders for his career.
Swanson was supposed to face Siver in February of this year, but an injury kept him out to the bout. Dustin Poirier stepped in and lost an entertaining three-round decision. With the win Swanson moved to 4-0 since his debut in the UFC, a debut that saw him lose Lamas. Siver himself has won two straight at 145, and his last loss came to Swanson’s training partner Donald Cerrone at lightweight. Now he will have a chance at redemption against a Greg Jackson-trained fighter.
