Former lightweight champ. Future Hall of Famer. Jiu-jitsu black belt. Wrestler. Deadly boxer. Frankie Edgar is all of these things, and after taking on top-ranked Chad Mendes in the main event of the TUF 22 Finale – and knocking Mendes the heck out – Edgar is undeniably next in line for the shot at the featherweight title.
No one anticipated Edgar ending things suddenly and violently at 2:28 of the first round. He’s Frankie Edgar – his modus operandi is to take damage and persevere, to outlast his opponents with endless cardio, to whittle them down until an opening presents itself. It wasn’t supposed to be quick. Mendes is too tough for that.
But no, it didn’t matter what Mendes was. Nor did it matter what Edgar had done so often in the past.
Mendes landed some kicks, entered in for some exchanges, threw with confidence, and… BAM!
It was a left- and right hook combo that dropped Mendes like a bag of potatoes, and it was all over.
Tonight, Edgar will be cageside watching Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor throw down.
Edgar will officially face the winner.
