During a recent interview with Forrest Griffin on the topic of Silva vs. Bonnar, Griffin was quick to defend his TUF opponent and friend Stephan Bonnar’s chances. He may not go as far as to say Bonnar will win the fight, but does believe that he will put on a better show than most believe he is capable of. When considering Bonnar’s size and decent ground game, along with his improved wrestling, he does have the formula to give Silva a challenge.
“I actually think Stephan’s going to surprise some people. I don’t know if he’ll win, but he’ll do well. He’s a big guy, he’s never been, I’ve never seen him be hurt by a punch, let alone knocked out. I don’t think Anderson’s going to want to get too close because Stephan’s a big guy with good jiu jitsu, you don’t want to be under him, you know. He’s been working his wrestling a lot the last couple years, you’ve seen that in his fights. He’s kind of evolved as a fighter so, I think it’ll be a better fight than people think. – MMAFightCorner.com”
As we edge closer to the event, the question of an upset still looms, despite what critics may think. The loss would likely still come as the second biggest upset as Georges St-Pierre lost his title to a fighter that was not signed in the UFC until he won The Ultimate Fighter Comeback season to earn the title shot. That fighter being Matt Serra earning the welterweight title in 2007.
