Obviously this fight makes sense after Dan defeated former UFC champion Mauricio Rua, but it also makes sense because this is a fight that can test Jon. Dan will not be one to let Jon play his own game, or let the fight come to a stalemate. In the later half of Dan’s career he has been known to try to take off his opponents head at all cost. Beyond that he can use the clinch and dirty boxing better than anyone else in the division and that is one part of the game Jon has not been tested too well in. What will he be able to do when his range is useless by being put up against the cage? Will Dan be able to put Jones against the cage?
Rory MacDonald vs. Jon Fitch
Jon Fitch may be coming off a loss, but he is still a top fighter in the division. MacDonald has shown to have strong wrestling and great standup ability. The question is, regardless of if he will fight him, if his wrestling can contend with GSP’s. Jon will be able to test that as he has the second best wrestling in the division. If Fitch want to be a contender again there is no better way then beating the red hot up and comer.
Ben Rothwell vs. Travis Browne
Rothwell looked in the best shape of his fighting career, and while he may be a veteran in the sport, he may be coming into the prime of his career at 30 years old. Another Heavyweight that had a great first round finish was Travis Browne. Matching them up is logical as most other heavyweights are already tied up in to fights. I would prefer to see Rothwell against Fabricio Werdum, but he is already slated to face Mike Russow at UFC 147. The winner of this fight will be in the mix at 265.
Michael McDonald vs. Brad Pickett
Michael could fight another former champion in Brian Bowles, but if Bowles was able to win he would not be in line for a title shot. Brad on the other hand would be coming off two wins over top fighters, and that could make him a title challenger. Also, Brad would not crumple on the feet, and he could even challenge Michael on the feet if he tried to challenge him there. This would be a great fight and something that could easily be toward the top of a UFC card.
Mark Bocek vs. winner of Jeremy Stephens vs. Donald Cerrone
Mark Bocek has proven he can beat most fighters outside the top 3 or 4 of the division. John Alessio may be a veteran, but he is nowhere near a top fighter in the UFC. Cerrone and Stephens have both had strong wins and tough losses in the UFC just like Bocek. Whoever wins the fight between Stephens and Cerrone could fight Bocek, and that way it would lead to whoever wins that fight to getting another crack at the upper echelon of the lightweight division.
