After storming through former UFC contender Jon Fitch at World Series of Fighting 3 in June, Josh Burkman has been tapped to fight for the promotion’s inaugural welterweight belt as expected, and will battle Steve Carl on October 26th. The welterweight scrap will headline WSOF 6, which will go down at the Coral Gables’ BankUnited Center in Florida.
Prior to his impressive, choke-out victory over Fitch, Burkman (26-9) also scored wins over Gerald Harris and Aaron Simpson under the WSOF banner. “The People’s Warrior” has won five straight fights and the last man to defeat him is current UFC welterweight Jordan Mein.
Although Carl (20-3) hasn’t taken out three UFC vets since signing with WSOF like Burkman, the Bellator vet has recorded back-to-back wins over Ramico Blackmon and most recently Tyson Steele. Carl has won six bouts in a row, and the last fighter to score a win over him is Bellator star Douglas Lima.
Here’s what WSOF President Ray Sefo had to say about the title fight in the official announcement:
“We’ve been looking forward to making our debut in Florida for some time now, and I’m proud to say we will be in Coral Gables on Oct. 26,” Sefo said. “Our headliner will see us award either Josh Burkman or Steve Carl the first championship belt in our promotion’s history, and I think that matchup will be something special. The whole lineup we’re planning will be fantastic, and I look forward to making more announcements very soon.”
In addition to Burkman-Carl, the promotion has confirmed that Carson “Little Juggernaut” Beebe (14-2) will battle rising bantamweight Marlon Moraes (11-4-1) in the co-main-event, and that undefeated lightweight Justin Gaethje (9-0) will fight UFC vet Dan “The Upgrade” Lauzon (17-4). Those are some interesting match-ups.
