WSOF 6: Carl Explains Why Title’s “Not Even in my Head”

Steve Carl

Heading into WSOF 6 this Saturday night, Josh Burkman has captured much of the spotlight, instead of the man he’ll fight for the wetlterweight title, Steve Carl. Of course, when you choke out one of the UFC’s longest running contenders in your last fight like Burkman did, it’s not surprising.

Recently MMA caught up with Carl to talk about the October 26th championship fight, and the 20-3 welterweight admitted the belt isn’t really on his mind.

No. Not to be disrespectful, because I would be honored to win the title and main event, the title is not even in my head. I love that I am fighting a guy that many have in the top ten welterweights in the world. That’s where I want to be and that is what I want to do. I just want to beat one of the best in the world regardless of whether I get a shiny strap after the fight.

Although Carl has won six straight fights, and all via first round submission, the 28 year-old will be the consensus underdog. Does Carl mind?

I like being in the underdog role honestly. I can’t really be put anywhere else honestly. I sometimes feel I spent my entire career being blacklisted because I’ll have a fight but then there’s no video or TV exposure. Always seemed to be the one to hear “Oh sorry, you’re the only one on the card whose fight got deleted.” So I just shook it off and was excited to get the win and looked for another one.

Carl also relayed that although he has a lot of “respect” for Josh, he’s not a “big fan of his stye” because he’s more of a “controller” and “doesn’t engage on the feet.” It’s going to be interesting to see how each guy comes out on Saturday; it’s certainly a huge fight for both.

WSOF 6 will be hosted by the Bank United Center in Coral Gables, Florida. Stay tuned to Caged for all your WSOF news and coverage.
