LAS VEGAS – Nick Diaz (25-7) has lost his title shot against Georges St-Pierre (22-2) at UFC 137 due to his second non-appearance at a mandatory press conference. Stepping in to replace Diaz is the former WEC champion, Carlos Condit (27-5).
UFC President Dana White told the press and public at today’s conference that Diaz could not take the pressure of headlining such an event.
“He looked me right in my face and lied to me and told me he’d do [the conference],” said White, who played a video promoting Condit as Diaz’s replacement. “Nick Diaz can’t handle the pressure of a major main event. … That’s what I think.”
Condit originally was scheduled to face B.J. Penn at UFC 137 after a four fight winstreak with three by impressive finishes.
St-Pierre was amongst the crowd, left in shock of Diaz’s actions.
“I just don’t understand how someone doesn’t show up for an opportunity like this,” St-Pierre said of Diaz. “I just can’t believe it. It’s amazing.”
No word at this time from the Diaz camp on how he could let such an opportunity slip from his hands. We will update you as news comes out.
