Cain Velasquez out for 6-8 months with injury from Lesnar fight

Undefeated UFC heavyweight Cain Velasquez (9-0) has just discovered that he will not be able to defend his newly acquired belt for 6-8 months. Velasquez’s trainer, Javier Mendez said that the champ injured his right shoulder during his dethroning of the much larger Brock Lesnar.

During a second MRI scan this past week, doctors revealed a badly torn rotator cuff that they speculate may take a minimum four to six months to heal, eight max.

The distraught champ, Velasquez says he will undergo surgery as soon as possible and is eager to get past the injury. Doctors believe Velasquez’s rotator cuff is 90 percent torn and will need extensive physical therapy.

Number one contender Junior Dos Santos is next in line for the shot at the belt but with the champ out six months, Dos Santos does not feel he would want to wait that long and may look for another challenger in the meantime says trainer Ed Soares.

With the heavyweight champion out for a long period as Lesnar was in 2010 does that mean the UFC will look for Dos Santos next fight to be the Interim heavyweight champ as done many times in the past? And if so who would you like to see fight for the interim belt?
