Brian “The All American” Stann (11-4-0) vs. Alessio “Legionarius” Sakara (15-8-0-1)
This is a fight between two fighters trying to reattain a certain luster to their career. Brian Stann is coming off a loss to Chael Sonnen where it was proved he still has major deficits in his ground game. Alessio, after only having one fight in the last two years, will look to gain back the momentum he had after a three fight win streak when dropping to 185. Both of these fighters debuted in the Light-Heavyweight division, but have found the most success at Middleweight and only one will continue that success.
Brian Stann is known to be a solider in and out of the cage. Stann usually relies on his hands to finish and win fights. Luckily, in this fight, he will not need to worry about the ground game too much as Sakara is all about the standup as well. While, Stann says he is unconcerned with Sakara’s power one has to wonder if threatened on the feet if Stann will take it to the ground since he should not be outmatched there.
It is all known that Alessio is a former professional boxer. With a record there of 9-1 with 8 knockouts it can be seen why Alessio likes to use primarily standup. His problem lies when he is baited into brawls with his opponents and is not able to implement his more methodical style. This can be seen in losses to Chris Leben, Houston Alexander, and Drew Mcfedries. When he is able to implement his game plan he can finish spectacularly. In this fight he must use range and dictate the fight not letting Stann land any of his power punches.
The Bottom line: This fight is hard to pick since both have the power to knock each other out. I think what will become a major factor in this fight is Sakara’s inactivity. He is coming off an ACL tear and has not fought in a year. Because of this Stann will take the fight by TKO in the second round.
