Following the recent news of Rory MacDonald suffering an injury, prior to his bout against Carlos Condit at UFC 158, the UFC was quick to shuffle Johny Hendricks into the slot, leaving Jake Ellenberger without an opponent on the card. Now the injury becomes Nate Marquardt’s big opportunity to return to his former glory. The UFC has announced Ellenberger versus Marquardt. The event is now patched and ready for March 16 in Montreal’s Bell Centre.
Marquardt, once a top middleweight contender, had been banned from the organization after ruining a headline bout, due to elevated levels of testosterone while using a TRT exemption. With his success in Strikeforce and the UFC’s purchase of the promotion, Marquardt is granted a second chance.
Ellenberger was looking to be next in line for a title shot with six-straight victories, until he came up short, via knockout against Martin Kampmann. Since then “The Juggernaut” has bounced back with an avenging win over Jay Hieron in October, at UFC on FX 5.
