The UFC handed out a total of four post-fight bonuses last night after UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. LaFlare in Rio de Jainero, Brazil, and all but one went to one of Brazil’s own.
The fighters — Godofredo “Pepey” Castro, Gilbert “Durinho” Burns, Kevin Souza, and Fredy Sorriano — each pocketed an extra $50,000 for “Performance of the Night.”
It was the third straight “Performance of the Night” honor for Castro, who scored a flying triangle choke submission over Andre Fili last night. The victory was “Pepey’s” third in a row to improve his MMA record to 12-3. He is 4-3 in the UFC.
Lightweight Gilbert “Durinho” Burns (pictured above) had also won a “Performance of the Night” honor in his last UFC appearance: an arm bar victory over Christos Giagos last October. Last night, “Durinho” repeated the feat with a third round arm bar submission over Alex Oliveira.
The lightweight, who now trains with the Blackzilians in Florida, was hailed by UFC commentator Brian Stann as the fighter most likely to challenge for a title one day among the event’s undercard. He is now 3-0 in the UFC and 11-0 overall in his MMA career.
The third of last night’s “Performance of the Night” recipients, Kevin Souza, earlier won “Fight of the Night” at last May’s TUF: Brazil 3 Finale. The featherweight, who fights out of Santa Catarina, Brazil, knocked out Katsunori Kikuno last night — earning his third UFC win in as many tries. He is now 16-3 in MMA.
The final recipient, and lone non-Brazilian, was bantamweight Fredy Serrano of Columbia. He scored a knockout victory over Bentley Styler in his UFC debut, and improves to 2-0 in his MMA career.
