Dos Santos welcomes Hunt fight, but remains wary
With the dust settling on the whole Dos Santos/Overeem/Hunt saga of “will they/won’t they?” and the Junior dos Santos vs. Mark Hunt fight finally set in stone, the former heavyweight champion has finally had his say on his new opponent.
Speaking to Fight World [viaTatame.com], “Cigano” also pulled no punches when asked about his former opponent, Alistair Overeem. (Excuse the Google translation errors).
“I do not pick opponents, so for me no matter who is the guy who I’ll face,” Dos Santos said. “I just need to know a time before to prepare for this opponent. When Overeem jumped out, found the UFC have put another wrestler, because I cannot wait for the fight. The guy [Overeem] is not [a] champion, [he] is nothing. If he was champion, I [would] still hold on.”
Moving on to discuss his new opponent, Mark Hunt (9-7 MMA, 4-1 UFC), Dos Santos was more complimentary, commending his courage in taking the fight having just fought himself less than a week ago.
“I have placed great UFC Mark Hunt, and I admire him very much for having accepted the fight, since he just fought. I admire and appreciate, because I want to fight May 25 and [this] will happen thanks to him.
“Mark is a very tough guy, beating strong [guys]. I have to be very careful. He has been champion in K-1, faced the best in the world and won exchanges. I will work hard [on my] strategy; I have learned a lot in my career. I guess now I know [and] see things a little better and hopefully I can use it in this fight.”
Former heavyweight champion Dos Santos (15-2 MMA, 9-1 UFC) faces former K-1 champion Mark “The Super Samoan” Hunt (9-7 MMA, 4-1 UFC) at UFC 160 on May 25 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, N.V.
