Just when things are starting to get pretty ‘unpleasant’ between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, as the UFC light-heavyweight champ apparently doesn’t care for Cormier’s title shot plans, Junior dos Santos says that fight isn’t happening anytime soon. Is it because “Cigano” believes Roy Nelson is going to take out Cormier? Or Alexander Gustafsson might upset Jones? It’s because dos Santos is certain he’ll defeat Cain Velasquez in their rubber match on October 19th.
At a recent UFC media function Cormier’s plans to move to light-heavyweight apparently came up, and when they did, dos Santos had this to say (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“He’s not (dropping to 205 pounds),” dos Santos said. “And you know why? Because I will defeat Cain, and he will want to fight me.”
It is an interesting point, as considering how tight Cormier is with his teammate Velasquez, one could understand if he wanted to fight dos Santos (provided he wins). Cormier is also ranked #2 in the division, so if he can take out Nelson in impressive fashion, the UFC could very well look to book it. Then again, Cormier could still make the drop to 205, just to avoid any potential conflict with Velasquez down the road.
And as far as Velasquez? And the recent media tour dos Santos has been on with the champ? “Cigano” offered this:
“Man, I spent a whole week meeting him every day,” dos Santos said. “At first there were some heat in the staredowns, but that was it. Imagine a whole week, more than once a day? We went to a TV show and started laughing, then we couldn’t stare each other without laughing. I couldn’t look to his eyes anymore.”
The two will throw down for a third time on October 19th at UFC 166, which will be hosted by Houston’s Toyota Center.
