Rafael dos Anjos has certainly built on the impressive campaign he had last year, as the lightweight has scored wins over Evan Dunham and Donald Cerrone in 2013 to lock up the UFC’s #6 ranking. As a result, not only is dos Anjos on the hunt for a fight that could get him a title shot, but he’s got former champs like Benson Henderson interested in fighting him as well.
Recently Henderson relayed on “The MMA Hour” that he and his camp were “leaning towards” a bout with dos Anjos, and here’s what the rugged vet had to say about the proposition (comments via MMA Junkie.com).
“Actually, Henderson is one of the names I was thinking about,” said dos Anjos, who defeated Kamal Shalorus, Anthony Njokuani and Mark Bocek in 2012. “I was thinking I should faceT.J. Grant, Gilbert Melendez or Ben Henderson next. That’s because I want to beat someone who will put me in a title shot.”
And when asked if he’s surprised to hear that “Smooth” was interested in fighting him, dos Anjos noted:
“No, I’m not surprised at all,” dos Anjos said. “I’m on a five-fight win streak.”
That you are. It’s certainly an interesting time in the lightweight division, as in addition to the contenders dos Anjos mentioned, the fast rising Khabib Nurmagomedov is also looking for a scrap.
Of course, what comes next for some of these fighters could depend on what goes down at UFC on FOX 9, when champion Anthony Pettis takes on Josh Thomson.
