After returning to lightweight earlier this year, not only is Diego Sanchez hoping to put together a title run, the veteran thinks champion Benson Henderson is far from a complete fighter. While the Henderson bandwagon may not be packing on fans as fast as some others, thanks to the champion’s seven fight decision streak, it’s hard to argue with winning results right? Not according to “The Dream.”
In a recent appearance on MMA Junkie.com Radio, Sanchez relayed that he believes Henderson in fact lost to Gilbert Melendez at UFC on FOX 7, and that although the champ is a “great fighter”, there’s plenty of room for improvement.
“After watching Benson Henderson’s performance against Gilbert Melendez, I must say, I wasn’t impressed. I see a lot of holes in his game, and I feel like that belt’s there for the taking.”
Since Henderson has narrowly escaped with the belt on a couple of occasions now, it’s completely fair to say that the champion has looked beatable. It should also be noted, however, that Sanchez is also coming off a razor thin, split decision win at lightweight. In March, he earned a split decision win over Takanori Gomi, in a bout plenty of people scored in favor of the former PRIDE champ. Sanchez also added that “nobody” can beat him, he believes, when he’s “on.”
While Sanchez is understandably talking a big game right now, any oddsmaker would tap Henderson to beat the vet as it stands right now.
