Spike TV announced today that Demian Maia (12-2) vs Alan Belcher (16-6) will lead UFC Fight Night 22 on Sept. 15 on The University of Texas campus. The three other fights expected on the TV broadcast are:
- Mac Danzig vs. Matt Wiman
- Cole Miller vs. Ross Pearson
- Jim Miller vs. Gleison Tibau
Belcher was last seen putting a beating on Patrick cote at UFC 113 earlier this year. That was his second straight win after taking out Wilson Gouveia at UFC 107.
The hard-hitting Belcher has been itching for a title shot and with a win over Maia, he might get his chance.
Maia was last seen confused and outmatched against the very talented, but at times very strange, Anderson Silva. It is no doubt that the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu wizard will look to get back to another shot at the title.
Although Maia’s stand-up has seen improvements with his unanimous decision win over Dan Miller, this one will surely be the classic “Striker vs. Grappler” . Look for Maia to try and get this one to the ground and Belcher to keep it standing.
Another battle on this card features a rematch between Danzig and Wiman. Their first fight was stopped prematurely by Yves Lavigne in the first round, when Lavigne mistakenly thought that Danzig had passed out from a guillotine choke attempt.
Other rumored bouts include Efrain Escudero vs. John Gunderson; Jared Hamman vs. Kyle Kingsbury; and Nick Catone vs. Tomasz Drwal. Expect the UFC to finalize the card within the coming weeks.
