Demian Maia’s move to welterweight continues to prove to be an advantages one as he defeats three straight 170 pound fighters, now including former top contender Jon Fitch. It was the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that proved to make the difference between the two grappling specialist.
Surprisingly, getting the takedowns early over the wrestling specialist in every round, Maia was able to keep ground-control with hooks and body triangles. Throughout majority of the rounds, Fitch was constantly defending from rear-naked chokes. Fitch was able to mount some brief offense in the third, as he goes for broke, but it wasn’t enough to win a around.
Official: Demian Maia defeats Jon Fitch via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Maia, a former contender for the middleweight title, may have just placed himself in a near title shot at his new weight class. One more dominant performance should be enough for the calls of Demian Maia versus the winner of Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz.
