Dana White: We’re going to fix TUF

This season the UFC decided to switch things up with “The Ultimate Fighter”, no longer airing on Spike TV, but on FX and even more importantly, all the fights are now live instead of pre-recorded. Sounds like a good idea right? Oddly enough though, this season of TUF has had the lowest ratings of all 15 seasons. With this past episode being the lowest at just 947,000 viewers. Although the show is still one of the highest rated Friday night shows, Dana White is not pleased and plans to make some changes,

“It’s not that I’m not happy, I said it’s a home run for them … since they’re dominating Friday nights with 18- to 34-year-old males. It’s not the best position for me, though.”

Friday nights in the past have been known not to have to best TV shows on for younger male viewers, but White and FX know this and are using it to their advantage for seasons in the future.

“I have – let me tell you – the best f***ing relationship with FUEL, FX and big FOX. I couldn’t be happier. I wish I was here for 17 years instead of seven. Everything that’s ever come up – every problem – they’re just as passionate and crazy about my business as I am. They give a crap. They care.

This is a team effort. We’re doing what we’re doing this season, and then we’re going to switch some things up. We’re going to make this thing work and make it great – if it’s Friday night or it’s whatever. Believe me.

Luckily for FX, White has total faith in them, and feels they know exactly what’s best for the coming seasons of TUF.

“As far as I’m concerned, FX is better than f***ing HBO,” he said. “You’re paying extra money to have HBO when the programming on FX smokes HBO right now. HBO’s known for all its great shows. I’ve heard ‘Game of Thrones’ is awesome, but if you look at the overall network and what FX is doing and HBO is doing, FX blows them away. And that’s on regular cable that you can watch everyday.”

Although White still feels that TUF hasn’t reached it’s full potential yet, and hopes to make it better than just ‘good.’

“We’re going to fix it,” he said. “I read all the s**t from people who have no f***ing clue what they’re talking about. We’re with guys who are the best in the business. We will get this thing dialed in and make it great.”

  • Thanks Dana & FX, Go Justified & Sons of Anarchy.

  • Problem w this season the coaches are lame and boring…most people beyond west coast don’t care about these coaches, bad choice

  • Jason – that’s why we didn’t watch. I can’t stand Faber, but I don’t dislike him enough to watch him lose (like I would someone like Koscheck or Lesnar). Cruz is okay but the two of them really are beyond boring

  • The fights just aren’t interesting. They rarely are on TUF.

  • Isn’t this show about a fight? Go watch WWE if you’re worried about the “entertainment” aspect of it there kiddies.

  • THIS SEASON SUCKED CUZ OF FABER, I HATE THAT CALI. HIPPIE & MOST EVERY ONE I KNOW THINKS THE SAME WAY,CRUZ GREAT COACH BUT HIS TEAM DOES NOT USE THE TOOLS HIM & HIS COACHES TEACH.WE NEED LESS DRAMA & MORE FIGHTING ON THE SHOW,THE SHOW IS ABOUT FIGHTING RITE?SO MORE FIGHTING LESS DRAMA THAT IS THE REASON I DO NOT WATCH IT ANY MORE A BUNCH OF DUDES & THERE MACHO DRAMA! IM A FIGHT FAN NOT A HOUSE FULL OF DUDES DRAMA FAN,LETS GET THIS RITE FX/UFC & MAKE THE SHOW KICK SOME ASS AGAIN!!!!

  • TUF should go back to the way it was,why try to fix something that ain’t broke. I guess it’s just about the money!

  • Idk why but i just haven’t been that interested in this season… I’m pretty sure though Dana will do something about it

How about you start by asking these guys who “know what they’re doing”, to consistently have the show start on time. For those of us who DVR the show, it’s annoying that it starts as late as 15 minutes past the intended air time and seems like amateur hour when it is constantly late to finish airing another B rate movie starring a burned out WWE star.

      Really sharp point.
Its ridiculous that I have to add up to 45 minutes to my TUF/DVR season pass because FX and/or Zuffa can’t consistently get this steaming pile on-air, on time…

The live aspect sucks as I live in the UK So need to sit up until 3am just to see it and it’s shown on ESPN which doesn’t really do repeat showings to help

  • Snow Crash says:

What’s the matter White? Afraid you’ll lose the ‘casual fan’ (read inbred mall rat without a clue) cause you don’t have enough drunk ass jerkoffs pissing on each other?

  • I love the live aspect of it and they all seem way more mellow. It was starting to be more about the antics and less about the fighting in past seasons. I hope they don’t change it too much and keep it live.

It would be great if the video replays of the TUF episodes were available on the internet sooner. Also, I liked “The Aftermath” and would like to see something like that again. Thanks.

  • MadMark says:

Most people want to see the training and then the fighters improve because of the training. This just isn’t so with the last few seasons. These latest sets of fighters come in like they know everything about mma and tactics. In general they are good, but far from the best. There’s always more to learn and when you stop learning, you better have dirt in your face. Not sure what would bring a larger audience maybe a similar setup with a tournament fight off. Start with 32 and fight down the last man in a bracket setup on drawing from the hat. Idk, maybe?

This season stinks because they changed the theme song!

Wanna complains about hbo and paying for crappy stuff but at least 1amonth he wants you to 50_60 bucks to watch a fight why not lower his prices so we can watch the fights and still pay bills? Sorry dana hope you fix things up but that could be a start :-)

  • david says:

you want better ratings? go to the local affiliate instead of something where you have to pay for cable. more and more people are doing away with cable because the cable cable companies suck. maybe playing on ufc.com so the web users can see it.

  • Frank Lee says:

no this season sucks because of the gay football music, theme and dipshit commentators. ufc is not fucking football can’t hire goldie and joe big deal. shit least let amir or someone other fighter commentate.also they launched it the same time as tuf brazil. pretty boring compared to tuf brazil. sad thing is it is taped. oh and lastly the whole live thing.

  • PATRICK says:

The show has turned into “The Bad Girls Club” with male bitches. MadMark’s got it right – these guys think they know everything none of them are likable AT ALL. We want to see training and fighting, NOT BITCHING AND MOANING.

  • couturian says:

Seems as if there is some confusion amidst the fanbase as to the purpose of TUF.
TUF isn’t about MMA, its about the UFC, and promoting whatever PPV event they have upcoming.
TUF is about getting you to drink Bud Light and eat at Burger King, preferably while wearing TapouT gear and riding your Harley.
Finally TUF is about making money for FX and Zuffa.
If you’re tuning into TUF to watch MMA, you’re better off hitting a local show and/or checking out Bellator and the promotions running shows Friday nights on HDNet.
TUF doesn’t need to be fixed nearly as badly as many supposed MMA fans need to be educated…

  • Richard B., says:

Look here is how it realy is for all u dana white and ufc haters. I pay 55 dollars to watch payperview fights of the ufc so eat shit brad. i get real raw fights not fake dramatized shows or corrupt boxing. ufc is still the cheapest paperview there is. Now on the tuf issue. I agree we need more fights less drama. it would be nice to have 2 fights a night instead of one, with twice the cast members. That would give you 20 min. of fighting instead of ten. I think that would fix alot with the raitings. People wanna watch fights, and the more you give them the more there gonna watch. Make it a little more interesting for them. And by that i mean throw them a bit better bonus’s for great fights and knockouts. i dont know im not a big company man or anything thast just my opinion

  • Sione N says:

Yo I agree with Richie B, On 2 fights imagine 2 live fights that shit would be awesome. I got to record it out here in Australia but not a week goes by without me wanting more. But whatever Dana does it won’t stop me from watching.
