LAS VEGAS – Late replacement, Costa Philippou has earned the notice he so strongly desired, defeating middleweight contender Tim Boetsch at UFC 155. The win does not come without criticism however.
Despite the combat being considered lackluster throughout by most – it was a fight shifting back and forth, with both men having the upper hand momentarily. Criticism of the win will likely come from the fact that Boetsch’s corner revealed that he was dealing with a hand injury taking place in the first. “The Barbarian” was unable to compete standing, or earn the take-downs from there on, which signed the beginning of the end. It was a sprawl, followed by timed and targeted punches from Philipou on the top, that had the grappling brawl called off.
Official: Costa Philippou defeats Tim Boetsch via TKO (Punches) – Round 3, 2:11
Stepping in with only a few weeks notice, the Greek slugger proved odds-makers wrong, as he defeated the heavily favored Boetsch. Philippou may not be a known name in the organization, yet he’s already racked up five straight in the stacked division, including wins over Jorge Rivera, Jared Hamman, Court McGee, Riki Fukuda and now Tim Boetsch.
