Costa Philippou forced out of Jacare Souza bout with injury

Formerly co-headlining the upcoming UFC on FX 8: Belfort vs. Rockhold card in Santa Catarina, Brazil — Costa Philippou has been reported by Ariel Helwani to be out of the fight with a cut above his eye. His opponent, Jacare Souza is now in need of an opponent with only two weeks until fight night. Whether the UFC can pull another last minute replacement as they recently did with¬†Ilir Latifi or replace Souza as well is unknown at this point.

Philippou has been considered by most as a likely top contender with a win over Jacare. With five straight victories in the UFC, and two by finishes with his fists, he has become a mainstay in the division.

Jacare, a former Strikeforce and Dream champion has been noted as one of the best submission artists in the sport. Recently taking out UFC veteran Ed Herman (via kimura) at the final Strikeforce card, the talented import is expected to make a splash in the UFC; just as many other fellow SF fighters have as of late.
