“Jon Jones! Get your s–t together! I’m waiting for you!”
So went the post-fight interview from Daniel Cormier, who realized his dream of winning the UFC light heavyweight title tonight at UFC 187 in Las Vegas.
Cormier ignited the MGM Grand Garden Arena crowd with those words, which followed his victory over Anthony Johnson. The former two-time Olympian rallied from an early knockdown to control the noticeably bigger Johnson, with his superior wrestling. The finish, a rear naked choke, came at 2:39 of round three.
Earlier in the evening, Chris Weidman successfully defended his UFC middleweight championship with a first round TKO of Vitor Belfort. Belfort managed one of his vaunted punching combinations — opening a cut on Weidman — before being taken to the mat and jolted with a series of punches. Weidman easily advanced to a mount (as seen above) and continued an assault, with the referee stepping in to halt the action at 2:53 of the first stanza.
Weidman ended his hostilities against Belfort in his post fight interview, hailing his opponent as a “legend of the sport.”
The night also featured a wild heavyweight brawl between Andrei Arlovski and former training partner (and longtime friend) Travis “Hapa” Browne. Arlovski landed a series of concussive blows on Browne to begin, but was dropped to the canvas moments later, and nearly finished. The former champion regrouped however, with Browne finally falling by TKO at 4:41 of round one.
