Not the best thing to hear from a fighter, especially a champion, just prior to his title defense. Retirement. Unfortunately that is exactly what Georges St-Pierre’s long-time head coach Firas Zahabi says he’s been hearing from the long running champ.
“George told me if the occasion should retire after this fight. If he still has the motivation for another training camp, it will continue. Otherwise, he will take his retirement.”
“Motivation is the most important thing. When you do not have it, you have nothing. Georges is motivated for this camp. He trains well. We need to train and train all day long, it is not easy, it’s really something. It takes a special mind to do the ultimate fighting.”
If you were not aware, there is also recent comments by St-Pierre himself that seem to point to a problem behind the scenes between the champ and the UFC organization [read here]. Firas doesn’t mention any of the conflict, but the lack of motivation to continue camps. Obviously, you don’t have motivation, you don’t have champ Georges St-Pierre. If that’s the case, we may rather see the champ walk out instead of taking a long fall down in the sport.
