“Cigano” Shows He Is Still A Contender

ufc fight night 86

For former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, getting back into the win column never felt so good.

Dos Santos picked Ben Rothwell apart Sunday in the main event of UFC Fight Night 86, earning a decision and ending the four-fight win streak for Rothwell.

“I think we did the right strategy because you can’t go against a guy that size because he is too big,” dos Santos said. “I used my footwork, threw high punches and used my boxing.

“I am a boxing guy, forget about jiu-jitsu and wrestling.”

“Cigano,” who has gone an even 3-3 over his last six, remained right on the cusp of title contention by stopping the title hopes of Rothwell. The losses for dos Santos (18-4) have come to Alistair Overeem and Cain Velasquez.

“You guys (in Croatia) made this experience amazing for me,” he said. “Thank you for that. I am glad I could win for you.”

Dos Santos does hold a win over current UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum.
