Last night the anticipated battle between UFC Fight Night: Holloway vs. Oliveira main eventers Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira was cut short when the Brazilian seemed suddenly stricken by an injury out of nowhere. The nature of the injury was a mystery.
Well, now the mystery is solved. Oliveira suffered an esophageal tear. That’s right, the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach, where food travels through. Oliveira somehow tore it.
It doesn’t get any more “freaky” when it comes to freak injuries. One second Oliveira was reaching for a takedown, the next he was in pain and extending his hand in submission.
As per MMAJunkie:
A timetable wasn’t given for Oliveira’s recovery. However, if not treated immediately, esophagus tears can be life-threatening conditions since they can allow “food or fluids to leak into the chest and cause severe lung problems,” according to Cedars Sinai. Oliveira is expected to remain in Canada for a few days of tests and rest.
Hopefully Oliveira has a speedy recovery.
