Chris Camozzi has been doing his best to move up the middleweight ranks as of late–four fight win streaks will do that– and the Colorado fighter believes a win at UFC on FX 8 could land him a top ten spot. One of the key reasons being, of course, is that Camozzi will face “Jacare” Souza at the May 18th event, who is the former Strikeforce champ and one of the planet’s best grapplers.
Camozzi was initially scheduled to fight Rafael Natal, but was matched up with Souza, after the Brazilian’s original opponent Costas Philippou withdrew due to injury.
In a recent appearance on MMA Junkie.com Radio, Camozzi outlined why he believes defeating Souza should move him into the highly touted, top ren rankings.
“I think with a win it definitely puts me in the top 10. There are other guys ranked in the top 10 that never beat a top-10 opponent, so I think by me beating one, I should get to replace one of those guys.”
Since dropping a unanimous decision to Francis Carmont in October, 2011, Camozzi has gone on to score wins over Dustin Jacoby, Nick Catone, Luiz Cane and most recently Nick Ring. If he defeats Souza, he’ll add the UFC’s #8 ranked middleweight to that list, and capture plenty of headlines in doing so.
