Yesterday was a big day for the Ultimate Fighting Championship — in regards to past, present, and future.
The past was in focus, as it was announced that the UFC Fight Pass subscription service would expand its library, including events from pioneering MMA promotions like Pancrase.
The present? Fan were treated to one of the most highly anticipated bouts of recent years, as UFC 182 in Las Vegas featured Jon Jones against Daniel Cormier.
But the UFC also announced something important to their future: the next defense of the UFC Lightweight Championship.
During UFC 182, it was revealed that UFC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis will soon defend against streaking contender Rafael dos Anjos.
The bout will serve as the main event of UFC 185 in Dallas, Texas on March 14.
The bout will be Pettis’ second defense of his belt. The Wisconsin native scored a second round submission victory over Gilbert Melendez last month at UFC 181. That win, the first time Melendez had ever been stopped, represented Pettis’ fifth straight victory and brought his MMA record to 18-2.
Dos Anjos has won three straight bouts in the UFC, including a knockout of former UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson in August 2014. Originally of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, dos Anjos has trained extensively at Evolve MMA in Singapore in recent months. He is 23-7 as a professional.
UFC 185, to be held at American Airlines Arena in Dallas, will be a pay-per-view event.
