After being forced off this month’s UFC 160 card, and an all-star bout with former champ Junior dos Santos, it looks like Alistair Overeem will return to the Octagon on August 31st. The promotion has plans to host UFC 164 on that date in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and according to a report from MMA Junkie.com, Overeem is expected to compete on the card.
The report cites “multiple sources” close to the former Strikeforce and DREAM champ, however, no information regarding an opponent was available.
Of course, Overeem will be looking to rebound from his jaw dropping and memorable stoppage defeat to Antonio “Big Foot” Silva in February. The win for Silva opened the door to a rematch with Cain Velasquez, which will go down at the aforementioned, May 25th, UFC 160.
Regardless of who Overeem faces next, it will be a massive fight for the devastating striker, who after putting away Brock Lesnar in less than three minutes at UFC 141, was widely expected to move his way into a title shot. Then “Big Foot” happened.
It will be interesting to see who the UFC taps for Overeem, and in all likelihood, it will be one of the promotion’s top heavyweights. A rumor is already circulating that it will be Travis Browne. Who wouldn’t want to see that fight?
