Yesterday, UFC President Dana White confirmed the main event for the upcoming UFC Fight Night in Berlin yesterday — and it’s a pairing of two top 10-ranked light heavyweights.
Alexander Gustafsson and Glover Teixeira will meet at the event, scheduled for June 20 at the O2 Arena in Berlin, Germany.
White made the announcement in an interview with Louise Green of MMA Crazy at the UFC 189 World Tour in London.
“It’s true,” White said when asked about the match-up, which was rumored in recent weeks. “I am confirming it is true.”
Gustafsson (pictured above) and Teixeira both have struggled in recent bouts, following unsuccessful bids for the 205 lb title.
Back in 2013, Gustafsson took UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones to the limit in a 2013 “Fight of the Year” candidate. But the Swede was a first round TKO victim in his last Octagon appearance: a title eliminator against Anthony Johnson.
Last year, Teixeira lost a lopsided decision to Jones, breaking a 20 fight winning streak. Last October, the Brazilian (now based in Connecticut) lost another decision, to Phil Davis.
The Berlin UFC Fight Night event is scheduled to air on UFC Fight Pass.
Gustafsson, 28, is 16-3 as a professional and ranked #2 in the UFC’s official rankings. Teixeira, 38, is 22-4 and ranked #6.
White also mentioned that the UFC will not likely return to London until 2016, and fielded a question regarding UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey.
“She’s our biggest star,” White said of Rousey, noting that he was aware the fighter was scheduled to appear at this past weekend’s Wrestlemania event in California. “She’s the biggest star in the company, ever.”
