Shorty after the cancellation of Strikeforce: Cormier vs. Mir, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker had told the media that Strikeforce would return with a ‘huge‘ January card. Today the organization has looked to have kept their word as they have already assembled three title fights on the upcoming card. The card is now set to take place January 12th in Oklahoma City at the Chesapeake Energy Arena with already three title fights on the line and still more to come.
Lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez has been set to make his title defense against his originally scheduled opponent, Pat Healy. Middleweight champ Luke Rockhold will look to make his third straight title defense against undefeated (due to no contest) Lorenz Larkin. Lastly, newly crowned welterweight champ Nate Marquardt will hope to make his first defense against the tough Dan Henderson training partner Tarec Saffiedine.
*Update* Daniel Cormier will have a chance to fulfill his obligation with his final fight in Strikeforce before transferring to the UFC. The GP Heavyweight winner will step in against newly signed Dutch fighter Dion Staring. Staring will be making his U.S. debut, standing at 28-7 in mixed martial arts.
