Thomson out-grapples Noons to decision (play by play)

Former Strikeforce champ Josh Thomson (19-5) bounces back with a victory over former Elite XC champ K.J. Noons (11-5) . Though a unanimous decision win, Thomson had self deprecating comments to make about his performance at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey. Here is the full play-by-play.

Round One:
Noons rushes forward and meets him in his corner. They touch gloves and first land is Thomson with a flashy flying crane kick. Thomson throws a few front leg kicks to keep him back. A takedown is stuffed by Noons. Thomson follows up and gets the takedown. The two go back and forth in attempts to advance from the half guard. Thomson starts to drop small, short punches from the half guard as the round ends. The crowd boos.

Round Two:
Noons rushes forward landing a superman punch. Thomson slips on a high leg kick attempt. Noons comes in and Thomson pulls guard. Attempts the reverse but gets half way and stands. Thomson trips Noons and is in half guard then in full guard against the cage. Not much action from there and the ref. stands it. It’s not too long till Thomson gets the takedown again. Not too much action from there as the round ends in guard again.

Round Three:
An early trip gets Thomson smoothly sliding into a arm triangle. Noons goes red but is able to turn out. Thomson now looking for the RNC from the back, unable to find. Noons turns and gets it to half guard. Thomson peppers small shots from the half guard continually. Now in half guard Thomson drops some elbows to the stomach. Thomson ties up Noons legs and slowly stands to end the card.

Josh Thomson defeats K.J. Noons via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Though Thomson had said his performance in the fight was “Shit,” Thomson may likely be looking at a title shot now against reigning champ Gilbert Melendez. Both men currently hold a victory over the other and the promotion would like to cap off the trilogy.
