Tonight, at Strikeforce: Los Angeles, Renato “Babalu” Sobral and Robbie Lawler are expected to face off with the winner getting a title shot at different weight classes. If Lawler wins, he is expected to face Middleweight champion Jake Shields (if Strikeforce resigns the free agent) or against Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza should Shields leave the organization.
Babalu would face off against light heavyweight champion Mohammed “King Mo” Lawal… or will he?
In a recent interview with Cagepotato, “King Mo’ expresses his disdain for fighting Babalu and says he will refuse a fight with the decorated Brazilian. Mo states that “Bablau is like a brother” and that he (Lawal) was a big fan of Babalu before beginning his MMA career.
It will be interesting to see how Strikeforce handles Mo’s reluctance to fight Babalu, should Babalu win. Strikeforce is already lacking in depth in the light heavyweight division, and it is unlikely either man will fight other light-heavyweight Gegard Mousasi as both men have battled the Dutch-Armenian kick boxer in their last fights. Babalu last fought and lost in August of 2009 to Gegard. Lawal is coming off a decision victory over Mousasi, in which he won the Strikeforce light heavyweight belt.
