Submission specialist and DREAM superstar, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (16-2-1) defeats former Special Forces Army Ranger, Tim Kennedy (12-3) to become the new Strikeforce middleweight champion, following Shield departure to the UFC. Souza known for his smooth striking abilities was able to capitalize on the smallest mistakes made by Kennedy to pull off an unanimous five round decision.
During the middle of round three Jacare opened a large gash on the head of Kennedy, which poured down into his face. Kennedy realized a short time later that he needed to try and take it to the ground which he accomplished with a good leg trip. The two scrambled and Jacare gets to his feet. Jacare starts to pull away again in the striking department.
Round four continues with the same as Jacare lands more over the top rights, and Kennedy misses numerous superman punches. Jacare takes a shot to the groin and intelligently takes a break. Jacare continues through the rest of round four and five with the slight edge standing. Tim Kennedy finishes the fight with a huge wrestling suplex of Jacare, but is not enough to get the judges on his side.
Souza now carries a three win-streak in his MMA career, wining his last bout against Joey Villaseñor by unanimous decision at Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery back in May.
