UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (26-4) has trained with some of the best. From his days at Chute Box in Brazil with the likes of Wanderlei Silva, to his sparring at the legendary Wild Card gym owned by Freddie Roach, to his current training stable at Black House in Los Angeles, Anderson Silva has learned and developed from the best. And now he is taking it to a whole new level.
While it sounds like an odd joke, video footage has revealed that Silva has recently been training with action movie star and seventh degree Aikido black belt Steven Seagal. Seagal, the star of such films as ‘Out for Justice’ and ‘Marked for Death’, is a fan of Silva’s, and feels that Silva has the edge over his opponent Chael Sonnen at UFC 117 on August 7 in Oakland, California. Though mostly regarded for his action films of the 90’s, Seagal was actually the first Westerner to teach Aikido in Japan, and it shows during his session with Silva, as Seagal’s strikes and maneuvers cause the middleweight champion to grimace in pain and tap out on numerous occasions.
For all the pomp about Silva’s new Sensei, Chael Sonnen (24-10) is not impressed. According to a post on what is widely believed to be his Twitter account, Sonnen noted, “Mr. Seagal’s impressive record of victories against bored stuntmen who are paid to lose makes his criticism particularly stinging.” This biting sarcasm of Sonnen’s is nothing new, and has been used time and time again by the middleweight contender to promote his August fight with Silva.
While Silva has yet to return the insults by Sonnen, training with Steven Seagal could be the ultimate parry to Sonnen’s verbal thrusts.
