MMA World Series of Fighting has their work cut out for them tonight.
Seems all the media attention is on the UFC, who travels to Brazil tonight for Ronda Rousey’s defense of the UFC women’s bantamweight title against Bethe Correia.
But that doesn’t mean they’re the only “game in town” or that they’re your best choice if you’re up for some MMA action tonight.
WSOF 22 goes down tonight in the UFC’s home base in Las Vegas, featuring what may be the best fight of the night for MMA fans, especially if you love jiu-jitsu.
The event is headlined by a welterweight title bout between champion Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares and challenger Jake Shields. If you’re like me, you’re a bit more excited about this than what appears to be an ugly mismatch which headlines UFC 190 — Rousey is an almost 19 to 1 favorite per some betting lines. As it turns out, we’re not alone:
Shields vs. Palhares is not the best fight of the night, but it may be toughest to pick.

It probably is the best fight of the night. That or the UFC strawweight tilt. https://t.co/lOFm6Bl367

The bout is a pairing of two of the best grapplers in MMA today, and it seems likely that they will engage one another on the mat rather than cancel each other out. In recent interviews, Shields called Palhares a “dirty sociopath” for his perceived “hanging on” to submission holds, and said of their bout — “ideally, I’d like to pop one of his knees!”
Here are two mini-documentaries on Shields and Palhares, made by Stuart Cooper Films over the last several years:
Also on the card is the night’s other bantamweight title bout between Marlon Moraes and challenger Sheymon Moraes (who are of absolutely no relation). The action starts at 10:30 pm ET, 7:30 pm PT on NBC Sports Network.
