Jake Shields on Palhares: “He’s a dirty fighter… I’m going to try and hurt him”

Earlier this month at MMA World Series of Fighting 17, Jake Shields scored the twelfth submission victory of his career, defeating Brian Foster by rear naked choke in the first round.

The victory improved the American Jiu-Jitsu stylist’s MMA record to 31-7-1 (with one no-contest) and earned him a shot at MMA World Series of Fighting Welterweight Champion Rousimar Palhares.

But it seems that the title isn’t the only reason Shields is looking forward to the showdown.

Shields, who has won titles in organizations like Strikeforce, Elite XC, and Shooto, appeared on Submission Radio to talk about the future match, the date and location of which has yet to be announced.

“He’s a dirty fighter,” Shields said of Palhares, who was banned from the UFC for failing to release submission holds in a timely manner. “So when you fight someone like this, you have to get the mindset back that he’s going to try and hurt me, so I’m going to try and hurt him.”

Shields calls Palhares’ skill level “phenomenal, with some of the best submissions in the game. I would say he has the best leglocks in all of fighting.”

“Anything is possible,” Shields said, of the possibility of being caught in one of Palhares’ signature leg locks. “So to say I’m not going to worry about it? That would be stupid of me, but I’m not particularly worried. I have great leg locks myself. I would love to go out there and to try to leg lock him back. Usually he goes in there with guys that don’t know what they’re doing, so he’s playing someone that can’t attack him back. And he’s a guy, you know he hurts people, and if he goes after me I’m going to have the same mindset. If I’m going to get something, I’m going to try and break it against him.”

Both Shields and Palhares, who is 17-6 in his MMA career, are undefeated in their appearances for MMA World Series of Fighting. In fact, both have won both of their bouts by first round submission.

Shields describes fighting for WSOF as a “a great experience so far. I’m ready to take the belt!”
