Friday’s WSOF 25 Features 8 Man Tournament, Return of “Macaco”

It’s something old, something new for MMA World Series of Fighting this Friday — as for the first time in the promotion’s history, WSOF 25 will feature a one night, eight man tournament.

It’s at once groundbreaking and a nod to the old school. One night tournaments were a staple of MMA in the mid-to-late 1990’s, with the Ultimate Fighting Championship leading the way back in 1993.

One of the most intriguing bouts in Friday’s tourney features one of the veterans of those wild days, Jorge “Macacao” Patino. Patino won several one-night tournaments in his native Brazil during the “vale tudo” (anything goes) era of the sport. Patino, who boasts a 38-15-2 record at age 42, will face rising star Islam Mamedov, one of several up-and-coming fighters from Dagestan, Russia. Mamedov, who was just five years old when Patino scored his first one-night tournament win, is 12-1 in MMA.

MMA World Series of Fighting 25 will take place in Phoenix, Arizona. A live stream for the night’s preliminary action will begin at 8 pm ET, 5 pm PT at WSOF.com. The main card will be televised on NBC Sports Network at 11 pm ET, 8 pm PT.
