ONE Championship will crown its first heavyweight champion later this year, as Brandon “The Truth” Vera returns to his familial homeland of the Philippines to face Chi Lewis-Parry for the gold.
The event is said to take place December 11 at Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena in Manila.
Vera, who is 1-0 in ONE, is easily the more familiar face of the two to North American fans. The 37 year old Filipino-American had a seven-year run with the UFC, including a victory over former heavyweight champion Frank Mir. He made his ONE debut last year, defeating Igor Subora by first round TKO.
Originally of Virginia but now based in San Diego, California, the 6’1″ 242 lb Vera has a 13-7 overall MMA record.
His opponent will be 32 year old Chi “Chopper” Lewis-Parry, who at 6-0 (with one no contest) has yet to be defeated in his young MMA career. A native of London, England, Lewis-Parry earned a TKO victory over Alain Ngalani at ONE 18 in his most recent bout.
The 6’9″ 243 lbs. Lewis-Parry also recently participated in GLORY kickboxing’s heavyweight contenders tournament, where he knocked out two opponents — before losing via TKO to Xavier Vigney in the final.
Vera and Lewis-Parry exchanged verbal jabs in videos which were shared on social media. Vera feigned being unable to recall Lewis-Parry’s name, calling him “Thai Iced Tea Parry,” while Lewis-Parry likened the bout to ordering a doughnut.
The next ONE event, Dynasty of Champions, is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept 1 in Shanghai.
