Two of MMA’s elite added more accolades to their resume tonight in Dubai — while a returning former contender notched a much-needed comeback win.
Ben Askren won the One FC welterweight championship tonight in the co-main event of ONE FC 19: Reign of Champions, with a TKO victory over Nobutatsu Suzuki. The bout was a one-sided affair, with Askren taking Suzuki to the mat quickly to begin his typical ground-and-pound attack. The end came at 2:33 of round one, with Suzuki failing to initiate any offense.
The night’s main event saw highly-ranked lightweight, Shinya Aoki, defend his ONE FC lightweight title successfully against Kamal Shalorus. Aoki quickly took the UFC vet down and applied a rear naked choke to keep his title.
Earlier, the event saw the return of Roger Huerta, the former Sports Illustrated cover boy who was once pegged to help the UFC’s penetrate the Spanish-speaking market. Huerta emerged from a two-year absence from the cage to earn a first round TKO victory over Christian Holley at 3:13 of round one, following a series of punches from mount position.
