Combate Americas – the Latino-centric MMA promotion helmed by UFC creator Campbell McLaren – is breaking new ground in New York tonight, with their ninth installment going down at the Turning Stone Casino in the upstate town of Verona.
Sure, there’s been pro MMA in casinos in Upstate New York for years, but the sport has finally been legalized in the rest of the state, so a big show after the ban’s been lifted is worth paying attention to… hence, these results posts.
Capping off the undercard were Paulina Granados and Jenna Serio, a pair of atomweights who came with every intention to make the other girl a bloody mess. And they succeeded!
For Granados, that meant a lot of wrestling and top control. It was rough going for Serio when it came to defending the takedown and getting out from under, but when she did, she was able to unload on Granados’ face with seemingly endless flurries.
By the end of the first round, Serio had a seriously swollen eye; by the end of the fight, Granados’ face had been tagged so much, she looked as if she’d fallen from the Ugly Tree and hit every branch on the way down.
